SARAH SCOTT JUNIOR HIGH
1919 – 1999

  Sarah Scott Middle School (Junior High until 1995) was named after a teacher who devoted her adult life to teaching. Miss Sarah Scott’s career as a teacher in Terre Haute began in 1881 and lasted until the time of her death in 1915. She taught mathematics, among other subjects. Her teaching career took her to a few different schools. She was employed by Terre Haute’s Fourth Ward school district until 1884, at which time she moved to the then-new Wiley High School building, which was located at Seventh and Walnut streets. In 1911, she was elected head of the math department at Wiley, a post she held until her death on August 27, 1915. Sarah Scott Middle School was first opened on March 17, 1919, with enrollment of 308 pupils and a faculty of thirteen. The principal was G. Lawrence Jones. Mr. Jones served as principal for thirty-five years, until his retirement in 1954. In 1954 the principalship was assumed by Mr. Mark McCullough, a man who helped bring about the greatest number of changes thus far in school’s history, namely an $800,000 dollar addtion, completed in February of 1962. Due to retirement, Mr. McCullough handed over reins of Sarah Scott in June of 1962 to Mr. Wayne Gormong, who continued in the position until June of 1972. Mr. Vyron Jones took over in the fall of 1972 and held that position until he retired June, 1986. Mr. Carlos Aballi served as principal from 1986 until April, 1993. Dr. Sandra Kelley served as principal from April, 1986 until September, 1999. Mr. Mark Miller then became the building’s principal until his retirement in 2011. Mr. Greg Gauer served has principal from 2011-2013.  Dr. Bruce Lautenschlager served as principal from 2013-2015. Scotia R. Brown was named principal in the summer of 2015.  Sarah Scott Middle School relocated to a new facility on the same site in the fall of 1999 again named in her honor.
